Fishing
We purchased El Figueral in 2004 after spending over 3 years
travelling through Catalonia and Aragon looking for our dream
Spanish home. Of course it had to have terrific views and
amazing fishing, but it had to have the potential to provide a
very special holiday experience for discerning anglers and their
family.
The River Ebro is an amazing river, fed by water from the
Pyrenees it has an abundance of water all the year round, good
weather, excellent scenery and the fishing, well! this is why
the Ebro is earning itself a reputation as one the European
greats. The river holds a vast head of Carp that don't know when
to give up plus the other odd species such as Zander and of course the
Wells Catfish for which the river is becoming ever more renown, with bigger and
bigger fish being caught year after year. The English pronunciation from
the Cassells Spanish dictionary being
"catfish or
self-propelling torpedo." Good
bank fishing is at a premium on the lower Ebro because of
Spanish conservation laws and access to the river. At El Figueral we currently have the
luxury of two bank swims that we have
made easily accessible and set on natural eddies were the fish
hold up from the current. Each swim is safe and comfortably
allows for two or three anglers.
However, if fishing the mighty
Rio Ebro from a boat is for you, then the local Villages of
Benifallet and Xerta have a number of river guides, who for a fee of
around €200 per day per boat will take out a party of up to 3
anglers. Of course we can make reservations, but book early as
they do get heavily booked.
You do need a licence’s to
fish the River Ebro, but to save you time we can arrange these prior
to your arrival for a fee of €20. Let us know at least two weeks in
advance, send us a copy of your passport and we will have these
waiting for your.
About tackle: The closest
airport to El Figueral is REUS (about 45km) and the cheapest and
only scheduled carrier flying into Reus is Ryanair, so far so good. However Ryanair
have a very strict baggage allowance of 15kg, so be careful what
you pack, we have heard too many horror stories about excess baggage
fees. We can supply a limited no of Catfish and Carp rods, reels,
pods and seats but
encourage you to bring your own terminal tackle, as the nearest tackle shop
is some 24km away. If you have any questions on what tackle to to
take contact us by e-mail or phone and we will always try and help.
Hire prices: 2*Carp Rod and Reel £40/week
2*
Catfish Rod and Reel

There is a deposit of £100 or €
equivalent at the time you take possession of the tackle.

About Bait: The Ebro is like most
large rivers, if you want big bags of fish you have to lay down the
ground bait. The Carp can be caught on most baits, sweet corn ,
worm, boillies, halibut pellets etc. For the cats live bait is by
far the best, however the Spanish River Authorities are in the
process of banning all live bait fishing. Easiest to get hold of are
eels as these can be bought, harder to obtain are small carp as most
rod caught ones are too big. Dead bait work as do Halibut pellets
and I have caught cats on Sardines bought from the local supermarket.
About Weather: It can get hot
even in the early and late months of the year, at this time be
prepared for cool evenings and mornings, During the summer period it
gets very hot during the day and remains warm through the night.
Also be prepared for flies and mosquitoes. In short make sure you
have a hat, sunglasses, suntan cream, fly spray and mosquito
repellent. |
